Yesterday we took the Anchorage youth to the beach at
Howth (see other post for more
Howth pics). There were about 9 Irish kids who would be middle-school aged in the states. The girls (there were no boys) all come to the Anchorage events because there is literally nothing else for them to do but get in trouble. The Anchorage is a Christian establishment, but none of the kids are Christians. It is an interesting dynamic. They know that there is a standard at the Anchorage, and Joe has "sessions" where he talks about the grace and love of God with the kids, but they have never heard this before. Take that in again, thirteen year
olds who have never heard of the Bible, of Jesus, of God. I don't mean they have never heard the truth about it, never understood it. I mean they have never heard the words. Literally.
They're great kids. They have a lot to give the world, and Joe can see that so clearly in them. He hopes to use the money earned from the flower nursery to send some of the youth to the third world during their transition year (year between high school and college). Here, he hopes they will see how blessed they are and how real the gospel is in the lives of people there. It's a very real dream for him. He raised over 20,000 Euro for Cambodia this year. (That's over 35,000 dollars.)
